Our History
Founded in 1970 as Angel’s Haven in Betterton, Maryland, the Kent Center has come a long way from its humble beginnings. Initially people with developmental disabilities were supported by an all-volunteer staff, and the five individuals that participated in services ranged in age from 4- 53 years old. By 1977, Angel’s Haven was the first provider on Maryland’s Eastern Shore to offer community living options to adults with developmental disabilities.
Where We Have Been
Growing dramatically over the last fifty years, Kent Center has reached many milestones, including the name change from Angel’s Haven, the establishment of an administrative headquarters on Scheeler Road in Chestertown, and the opening of the Hidden Treasures thrift shop. We now support people with developmental disabilities to live, work and meaningfully participate in their communities with a staff that has grown to nearly 200 employees.
